Nu de pu\u021bine ori, aceste c\u0103ut\u0103ri \u0219i rezultatele lor \u2013 de tot felul: idealiste, retribuite, pragmatice, oportuniste, duplicitare, imprevizibile, instabile etc. \u2013 au fost o ches\u00adtiune de via\u021b\u0103 \u0219i de moarte, de subzisten\u021b\u0103 sub\u00adaltern\u0103 ori \u00eenstr\u0103inare, de resurec\u021bie ori m\u0103car provizorat viabil p\u00een\u0103 \u00een momentul fast al unui nou \u00eenceput.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Captatio benevolentiae<\/em>\u00a0ca strategie etno-na\u021bional\u0103<\/h3>\n<p>\u00cen epoca modern\u0103 \u0219i contemporan\u0103, de la apari\u021bia ideii na\u021bionale \u0219i p\u00een\u0103 ast\u0103zi, c\u00eend disolu\u021bia acestui principiu de coeziune cu voca\u021bie politic\u0103 (unul construit, de bun\u0103 seam\u0103, dar fierbinte ca orice crez) se accelereaz\u0103 (\u00een ciuda unor mi\u0219c\u0103ri marginale de sens contrar), competi\u021biile \u0219i conflictele dintre state au avut \u00een permanen\u021b\u0103 o dimensiune simbolic\u0103 decisiv\u0103. Pe l\u00eeng\u0103 teritoriu, resurse naturale, popula\u021bie \u0219i suveranitatea asupra lor, autoritatea asupra bunurilor simbolice (limb\u0103, cultur\u0103, identitate colectiv\u0103, istorie \u0219i nara\u021biunile canonice despre ele) reprezint\u0103 o miz\u0103 suprem\u0103 a tuturor competi\u021biilor mimetice \u0219i negocierilor complexe care stabilesc \u00een fiecare moment \u0219i \u00een durata lung\u0103 pozi\u021bia fiec\u0103rei na\u021biuni \u00een cadrul regiunii\/regiunilor sale istorice. Poate c\u0103 nic\u0103ieri \u0219i nicic\u00eend nu s-au adeverit mai spectaculos aceste considera\u021bii ca \u00een cazul preg\u0103tirii \u0219i semn\u0103rii tratatelor de pace de dup\u0103 cele dou\u0103 r\u0103zboaie mondiale. Parisul \u0219i localit\u0103\u021bile din jur au fost cu acele prilejuri teatrul unor discu\u021bii aprinse \u0219i al unor manevre de culise care, din toate punctele de vedere, au redesenat h\u0103r\u021bile (militare, geopolitice, statale, mentale etc.) \u0219i au (re)scris istoria.<\/p>\n<h3>De la rela\u021bii sporadice\u00a0la lobby<\/h3>\n<p>Rom\u00e2nii \u0219i Rom\u00e2nia (pentru a rezuma o lung\u0103 list\u0103 de entit\u0103\u021bi fluide \u0219i cu geometrie variabil\u0103 care au condus la aceste dou\u0103 realit\u0103\u021bi moderne) nu fac excep\u021bie. Genera\u021bia de la 1848 a inventat la noi ceea ce al\u021bii aveau s\u0103 numeasc\u0103\u00a0<em>lobby(ing)<\/em>, preg\u0103tind \u00een saloanele, publica\u021biile, asocia\u021biile publice \u0219i societ\u0103\u021bile secrete, cancelariile \u0219i amfiteatrele occidentale (\u00een primul r\u00eend pariziene; nu vorbesc aici de antecedentele din Vechiul Regim \u0219i de geografia lor simbolic\u0103) revolu\u021biile burgheze ale anilor 1848-1849, procesul Unirii Principatelor (1856-1859) \u0219i recuperarea Basarabiei propriu-zise (1856-1878), aducerea Principelui Carol I (1866), Independen\u021ba (1877-1878), crearea Regatului (1881).<\/p>\n<p>Astfel, rom\u00e2nii care-l frecventau pe Jules Michelet au trecut de la condi\u021bia de \u201ebuni discipoli\u201c exotici \u0219i de util material didactic pentru predarea istoriei romantice a Europei (fenomenul a fost discutat de Catherine Durandin) la statutul de exemplu de poten\u021bial istoric \u0219i civiliza\u021bional (manipul\u00eendu-\u0219i magistrul, dup\u0103 ce fo\u0219tii buni discipoli, polonezii, \u00ee\u0219i g\u0103siser\u0103 \u00een Adam Mickiwiecz un magistru din neamul lor, iar maghiarii pierduser\u0103 competi\u021bia cu noi pentru locul vacant; episodul a fost reconstituit de Miskolczy Ambrus). Dar evolu\u021bia lobby-ului nostru nu s-a oprit, acesta consolid\u00eendu-se \u00een timp scurt la Viena (unde \u00eenceputurile fuseser\u0103 realizate de \u0218coala Ardelean\u0103), debut\u00eend \u0219i cresc\u00eend la Berlin, noua capital\u0103 imperial\u0103 german\u0103 (1871\u20111918).<\/p>\n<p>\u00cen timp, dou\u0103 noi genera\u021bii \u0219i-au f\u0103cut debutul \u0219i s-au maturizat: una, preponderent conservatoare, dar cu tot felul de excep\u021bii (merg\u00eend p\u00een\u0103 la social-democra\u021bie), a contribuit la Marea Unire \u0219i la edificarea Rom\u00e2niei Mari; cealalt\u0103, afirmat\u0103 \u00een perioada interbelic\u0103, radicalizat\u0103 preponderent la extrema dreapt\u0103 (\u0219i aici, excep\u021biile s\u00eent semnificative, merg\u00eend p\u00een\u0103 la comunism), ata\u0219at\u0103 spiritual-ideologic-politic revolu\u021biei conservatoare \u0219i\/sau Germaniei hitleriste, decimat\u0103 de istoria anilor 1940-1950, s-a risipit \u00een deten\u021bie, exil \u0219i neant; numai c\u00ee\u021biva supravie\u021buitori, ale c\u0103ror biografii s\u00eent complicate \u0219i nu rareori tot tragice p\u00een\u0103 la urm\u0103, au mai putut \u00eencerca s\u0103 joace rolul istoric al predecesorilor. Ceea ce caracterizeaz\u0103 aceste dou\u0103 genera\u021bii de mediatori \u0219i promotori ai agendei rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti \u00een raport cu prima este apari\u021bia \u00een cercurile \u0219i re\u021belele lor a unor prieteni occidentali de v\u00eerste apropiate (de multe ori, colegi de studen\u021bie), care vin \u00een Rom\u00e2nia, o studiaz\u0103 din diverse unghiuri, ajung s-o iubeasc\u0103 \u0219i s-o serveasc\u0103 \u00een fel \u0219i chip.<\/p>\n<p>Geograful francez Emmanuel de Martonne, cel care a desenat \u0219i argumentat la Trianon harta Rom\u00e2niei, este exemplul cel mai elocvent pentru aceast\u0103 evolu\u021bie a rom\u00e2nilor de la statutul de discipol la cel de coleg. Treptat, rom\u00e2nii \u0219i Rom\u00e2nia se cristalizeaz\u0103 \u0219i ca obiect de studiu academic \u00een marile universit\u0103\u021bi ale Occidentului, dup\u0103 ce preocuparea ap\u0103ruse treptat \u00een cele de la Budapesta, Cern\u0103u\u021bi \u0219i Viena. Procesul a continuat \u0219i s-a extins,\u00a0<em>mutatis mutandis<\/em>, p\u00een\u0103 azi, c\u00eend exist\u0103 mai multe genera\u021bii de speciali\u0219ti \u00een studii rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti, de origine str\u0103in\u0103 sau rom\u00e2n\u0103, \u00een numeroase universit\u0103\u021bi din toat\u0103 lumea. Societatea de Studii Rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti (Society of Romanian Studies) este desigur mediul \u00een care ei trebuie c\u0103uta\u021bi prioritar, dar proiectele \u00een care rom\u00e2nii \u0219i Rom\u00e2nia apar cel pu\u021bin pentru compara\u021bii asimetrice sau multilaterale obligatorii (nu doar \u00een plan epistemologic, ci ca o condi\u021bie pentru finan\u021bare) implic\u0103 mult mai mul\u021bi cercet\u0103tori, cu rezultate variabile.<\/p>\n<h3>O istorie na\u021bional\u0103 din perspectiv\u0103 extern\u0103<\/h3>\n<p>Nu avem \u00eenc\u0103 o istorie sistematic\u0103 a rom\u00e2nilor \u0219i a Rom\u00e2niei din aceast\u0103 crucial\u0103 perspectiv\u0103 extern\u0103 (dincolo de imaginea Rom\u00e2niei prin c\u0103l\u0103tori \u0219i altele asemenea, deja relativ bine documentate \u0219i studiate), dar nu lipsesc unele contribu\u021bii \u0219i chiar fragmente promi\u021b\u0103toare ale viitoarei sinteze. Aceea va trebui s\u0103 analizeze critic, a\u0219a cum o istorie colonial\u0103 a Rom\u00e2niei (pe care am sugerat-o \u00eentr-un eseu despre Bucovina) trebuie s\u0103 reconstituie crearea exogen\u0103, \u00een cadrul unui proces de colonizare, a unor no\u021biuni ulterior autohtonizate \u0219i devenit ingrediente aparent eterne,\u00a0<em>increate<\/em>, ale identit\u0103\u021bii noastre, contribu\u021bia exogen\u0103 la constituirea negociat\u0103 a studiilor rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti \u0219i a obiectelor lor de studiu.<\/p>\n<p>Educa\u021bia lui Keith Hitchins<\/p>\n<p>Prilejul trist al g\u00eendurilor de mai sus este dispari\u021bia recent\u0103 a lui Keith Hitchins, figur\u0103 paradigmatic\u0103 a studiilor rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti din ultimele \u0219ase decenii. Hitchins, n\u0103scut \u00een 1931, a fost la Harvard discipolul lui Robert Lee Wolff (1915-1980), unul dintre pionierii studiilor despre Balcani \u00een Statele Unite, paradigmatic el \u00eensu\u0219i pentru constituirea acolo a abord\u0103rii interdisciplinare (combin\u00eend utilitarist cam toate \u0219tiin\u021bele sociale cu numeroase discipline umaniste), deopotriv\u0103 academic\u0103 \u0219i strategic\u0103, av\u00eend r\u0103d\u0103cini interbelice, \u00eenfloritoare \u00een R\u0103zboiul Rece, acum criticat\u0103 politic \u0219i deconstruit\u0103 ideologic, declasat\u0103 academic \u0219i finan\u021bat\u0103 mult mai pu\u021bin generos:\u00a0\u00a0<em>area studies<\/em>, studii regionale. Wolff a fost mobilizat \u00een Al Doilea R\u0103zboi Mondial ca ofi\u021ber \u00een OSS (Office of Strategic Services), serviciul militar de informa\u021bii al SUA (1942-1945) \u0219i predecesorul CIA (Central Intelligence Agency, \u00eenfiin\u021bat\u0103 \u00een 1947). Dintre subdisciplinele care formau\u00a0<em>area studies,<\/em>\u00a0antropologia cultural\u0103 a trecut la sf\u00eer\u0219itul anilor 1960 \u0219i \u00eenceputul anilor 1970 prin cel mai complet proces de critic\u0103 \u0219i autocritic\u0103, r\u0103m\u00een\u00eend cu stigmatul de\u00a0<em>handmaiden of colonialism<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>R\u0103zboiul din Vietnam adusese \u00een aten\u021bia opiniei publice, \u00eentre altele, anumite coinci\u00adden\u021be nefericite \u00eentre studiile de teren ale unor autori \u0219i harta bombardamentelor cu napalm, ceea ce amintea, pentru a da un exemplu celebru legat de noi, de ciudata scriere din 1943 a lui Ruth Benedict despre rom\u00e2ni \u0219i Rom\u00e2nia (de la daci \u0219i romani, literalmente dup\u0103 ureche, bazat\u0103 pe interviuri cu rom\u00e2ni \u2013 cam 25, potrivit lui Margaret Mead), redactat\u0103 pentru Office of War Information. Studiile istorice nu au avut chiar aceea\u0219i soart\u0103, dar istoricii occidentali, \u00een special americani (ca \u0219i antropologii, sociologii, politologii etc.), au avut de \u00eenfruntat \u00een \u021b\u0103rile pe care le studiau suspiciuni a c\u0103ror motiva\u021bie istoric\u0103 era greu de negat, exacerbate \u0219i instrumentate de regimurile totalitare comuniste (la fel a fost \u0219i pe alte continente, dar aici m\u0103 rezum la blocul sovietic).<\/p>\n<p>Din fericire pentru t\u00een\u0103rul Hitchins, Wolff, mentorul s\u0103u, era \u0219i un exponent al studiilor generale despre Occident (legendara\u00a0<em>Western Civ<\/em>, obiect de studiu inevitabil p\u00een\u0103 \u0219i \u00een cele mai modeste colegii americane, adesea la un nivel rudimentar, ast\u0103zi discreditat din ra\u021biuni similare celor evocate mai sus; nu insist, subiectul a fost relansat spectaculos \u00een ultimele luni), avea o frumoas\u0103 cultur\u0103 umanist\u0103 (cu special interes pentru romanul victorian). Iar toate acestea se petreceau la sf\u00eer\u0219itul anilor 1950 \u0219i \u00eenceputul anilor 1960, la Harvard, o citadel\u0103 a \u00eenaltei culturi.<\/p>\n<p>Astfel, Hitchins, deosebit de inteligent \u0219i de serios, cu o inepuizabil\u0103 curiozitate enciclopedic\u0103, a \u00eenceput s\u0103 studieze cam tot ce se putea studia despre Balcani, extinz\u00eendu-\u0219i treptat terenul spre Europa Central\u0103, Occident (Western Civ!), Caucaz, Asia Central\u0103, Iran etc. A \u00eenv\u0103\u021bat \u2013 din tinere\u021be \u0219i p\u00een\u0103 la senectute \u2013 aproape dou\u0103zeci de limbi de pe acest vast \u0219i divers teritoriu, deslu\u0219ind tipare \u0219i asem\u0103n\u0103ri, procese \u0219i diferen\u021be, influen\u021be \u0219i confluen\u021be, conflicte \u0219i sinergii. C\u00eend te ui\u021bi de at\u00eet de sus \u0219i ai, pe l\u00eeng\u0103 o rar\u0103 capacitate intelectual\u0103, un suflet mare, ajungi, ca Hitchins, la o viziune stoic\u0103 \u0219i \u00een acela\u0219i timp empatic\u0103 (nu doar tolerant\u0103) despre tot \u0219i toate, te interesezi \u0219i de cultura \u00eenalt\u0103, \u0219i de cea popular\u0103, \u0219i de eroi, \u0219i de oamenii de r\u00eend, \u0219i de r\u0103zboaie ori infrastructuri, \u0219i de idei, vise, fantasme ori credin\u021be. Vrei s\u0103 ajungi \u2013 \u0219i, \u00een cazul lui, chiar ajungi \u2013, la\u00a0<em>istoria total\u0103<\/em>\u00a0(ca Lucien Febvre \u0219i genera\u021biile succesive de la\u00a0<em>Annales<\/em>) sau urmezi aproape infinita list\u0103 de domenii pe care o stabilea Arthur O. Lovejoy, acum opt-nou\u0103 decenii, pentru istoria ideilor.<\/p>\n<h3>Hitchins \u00een Rom\u00e2nia<\/h3>\n<p>Cu aceste premise, cariera lui Hitchins putea porni pe foarte multe trasee. Dar hazardul (necesitatea?) a f\u0103cut ca, \u00een cadrul destaliniz\u0103rii, s\u0103 devin\u0103 posibile, dup\u0103 o serie de tratate \u0219i acorduri bilaterale semnate de Statele Unite cu URSS \u0219i sateli\u021bii s\u0103i, cercet\u0103ri de teren. Guvernul american \u0219i toate agen\u021biile sale (de la cele de spionaj, amintite mai sus, la cele noi, concepute pentru schimburi culturale \u0219i academice), diverse funda\u021bii vechi \u0219i noi, mai mult sau mai pu\u021bin private, chiar universit\u0103\u021bile \u0219i asocia\u021biile profesionale, urm\u00eend toate o strategie coerent\u0103, au stabilit astfel pun\u021bile necesare noii etape a vie\u021bii interna\u021bionale. Un alt vechi prieten american, istoricul Alexander J. Rieber (cunoscut \u00een Rom\u00e2nia de numeroase promo\u021bii de absolven\u021bi de la Central European University), newyorkez cu origini germane, n\u0103scut tot \u00een 1931, care \u0219i-a trecut \u00een 1959 doctoratul despre Stalin \u0219i comuni\u0219tii francezi la Columbia, a participat la primul desant american \u201ecultural-academic-artistic\u201c la Moscova, al\u0103turi de tot felul de tineri universitari, muzicieni de jazz, scriitori etc. selecta\u021bi din toat\u0103 \u021bara.<\/p>\n<p>Keith Hitchins, tot pe atunci, ar fi plecat \u00een Iugoslavia dac\u0103 ar fi putut, dar s-a ivit o Burs\u0103 Fulbright \u00een Republica Popular\u0103 Rom\u00e2nia, astfel c\u0103 a putut trece de la primele sale lucr\u0103ri studen\u021be\u0219ti despre Rom\u00e2nia la opera sa de o via\u021b\u0103. \u00cen cadrul acesteia, rom\u00e2nii \u0219i Rom\u00e2nia, de\u0219i nu au fost singurele preocup\u0103ri, aveau s\u0103 ocupe de departe locul central. \u00cen anii 1970, de\u0219i R\u0103zboiul Rece cuno\u0219tea o relaxare f\u0103r\u0103 precedent, tot cam a\u0219a au ajuns \u00een \u021bara noastr\u0103 (altminteri n\u0103p\u0103stuit\u0103, cum tot repet\u0103m, dar cu mare noroc la savan\u021bi str\u0103ini), fiindc\u0103 Bulgaria se \u00eenchisese brusc, Katherine Verdery \u0219i Gail Kligman, pentru a da dou\u0103 exemple americane semnificative. Cu diverse diferen\u021be specifice, acestea au fost \u0219i traiectoriile rom\u00e2ni\u0219tilor din toate domeniile veni\u021bi \u00een Rom\u00e2nia \u00een perioada comunist\u0103.<\/p>\n<p>Un telefon din toamna lui 1960 (de la Departamentul de Stat), a\u0219teptat f\u0103r\u0103 mare speran\u021b\u0103 dup\u0103 un altul, primit \u00een var\u0103, l-a informat pe Keith Hitchins c\u0103 trebuia s\u0103-\u0219i fac\u0103 bagajele: pleca practic imediat \u00een Rom\u00e2nia, cu o burs\u0103 Fulbright de doi ani. Acei primi doi ani de studii (primul la Bucure\u0219ti, al doilea la Cluj), urma\u021bi de cursurile de var\u0103 la Sinaia (\u0219i despre acest subiect ar merita s\u0103 avem o monografie serioas\u0103) \u00een 1963 \u0219i de \u00eenc\u0103 un an academic, 1965-1966, au des\u0103v\u00eer\u0219it formarea lui de rom\u00e2nist, i-au creat o ampl\u0103 re\u021bea de contacte personale \u00een mediul istoriografic (inclusiv \u00een domeniul sensibil al istoriei ecleziastice), \u00een universit\u0103\u021bi, institute, biblioteci \u0219i arhive (desigur, cel pu\u021bin crispate la \u00eenceput, \u0219i atent monitorizate de Securitate p\u00een\u0103 \u00een 1989), i-au configurat agenda de cercetare pentru \u00eentreaga via\u021b\u0103.<\/p>\n<p>Hitchins avea s\u0103 revin\u0103 adesea \u00een Rom\u00e2nia, p\u00een\u0103 aproape de sf\u00eer\u0219itul lungii \u0219i \u00eemplinitei sale vie\u021bi, astfel c\u0103 el a fost \u201espectatorul angajat\u201c (cu formula lui Raymond Aron) al unui \u00eendelungat proces de schimbare istoric\u0103 \u0219i istoriografic\u0103. Prin numero\u0219ii s\u0103i colegi, prieteni, colaboratori, discipoli \u0219i\u00a0 admiratori, precum \u0219i prin vastul public al numeroaselor sale lucr\u0103ri savante, scrise \u00een cea mai frumoas\u0103 \u0219i mai curg\u0103toare proz\u0103 academic\u0103, Hitchins a fost de fapt mai mult dec\u00eet un spectator, oric\u00eet de angajat, mai mult dec\u00eet un\u00a0<em>participant observer<\/em>. \u00cen toate rolurile amintite mai sus, a fost un protagonist. \u00cen Statele Unite, \u00een Rom\u00e2nia \u0219i la Central European University, el a fost discipolul \u0219i colegul, apoi colegul \u0219i mentorul generos al mai multor genera\u021bii de speciali\u0219ti \u00een studii rom\u00e2ne\u0219ti comparate. To\u021bi au avut \u0219ansa de a cunoa\u0219te un str\u0103in ideal: exigent \u0219i z\u00eembitor, apropiat \u0219i solidar, afectuos \u0219i lucid. Care, asemenea oric\u0103rui prieten adev\u0103rat, r\u0103m\u00eene el \u00eensu\u0219i pentru a te \u00eendemna s\u0103 fii tu \u00eensu\u021bi.<\/p>\n<h3>Prietenul<\/h3>\n<p>A\u0219a l-am cunoscut \u0219i eu. Dintre numeroasele noastre \u00eent\u00eelniri, le-a\u0219 men\u021biona pe cele din cadrul a dou\u0103 conferin\u021be \u00een care Keith Hitchins a avut un rol proeminent. Prima a fost conferin\u021ba\u00a0<em>Cultura \u0219i politica identit\u0103\u021bii \u00een Rom\u00e2nia modern\u0103<\/em>, pe care am organizat-o \u00eempreun\u0103 cu Irina Livezeanu la Palatul Elisabeta \u00een zilele de 22-30 mai 1998 sub auspiciile publica\u021biei create de Lovejoy,\u00a0<em>Journal of the History of Ideas<\/em>. Prelegerile inaugurale au fost rostite, nu f\u0103r\u0103 o semnifica\u021bie simbolic\u0103, de Keith Hitchins \u0219i Alexandru Zub (Revista\u00a0<em>22<\/em>\u00a0a inclus \u00een num\u0103rul s\u0103u din 14-20 iulie 1988 un supliment legat de conferin\u021b\u0103:\u00a0<em>https:\/\/revista22.ro\/storage\/arhivapdf\/28_1998.pdf<\/em>). A doua a fost conferin\u021ba\u00a0<em>Modernism and<\/em>\u00a0<em>Antimodernism. Theories, Visions, Ideologies, Politics<\/em>, pe care am organizat-o \u00eempreun\u0103 cu Roger Griffin, Marius Turda \u0219i Sorin Alexandrescu la Sala \u201eTinerimea Rom\u00e2n\u0103\u201c, \u00een zilele de 19-21 septembrie 2008 (v.\u00a0<em>Cuv\u00e2ntul<\/em>, serie nou\u0103, nr.1-2, august-septembrie 2008, precum \u0219i volumul colectiv asociat coordonat de mine,\u00a0<em>Modernism \u0219i antimodernism<\/em>.<em>\u00a0Noi perspective interdisciplinare.<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Fapt relevabil, Hitchins a primit atunci o decora\u021bie regal\u0103, a\u0219a c\u0103 am ajuns \u00eempreun\u0103 din nou, dup\u0103 un deceniu, la Palatul Elisabeta, \u00eentre timp redevenit re\u0219edin\u021b\u0103 a Familiei Regale. \u00cen ambele conferin\u021be, capacitatea de sintez\u0103 \u0219i luciditatea analitic\u0103 ale lui Hitchins au fost concurate doar de mi\u0219c\u0103torul s\u0103u ata\u0219ament fa\u021b\u0103 de Rom\u00e2nia, uneori contrariant pentru rom\u00e2nii crescu\u021bi la \u0219coala stigmatului colectiv. Dar Hitchins r\u0103m\u00eenea cu capul pe umeri \u0219i \u00een cele mai calde pagini despre rom\u00e2ni \u0219i Rom\u00e2nia, inspirate de idei, fapte \u0219i figuri admirabile. El nu era genul de str\u0103in care\u00a0<em>goes native<\/em>, care fuzioneaz\u0103 emo\u021bional cu ceea ce, dincolo de toate leg\u0103turile afective, trebuie s\u0103 r\u0103m\u00een\u0103 un obiect de studiu. Nici nu se compl\u0103cea, ca at\u00ee\u021bia al\u021bii, din narcisism, vanitate, orientalism, interese de tot felul, \u00een rolul de \u201estr\u0103in de serviciu\u201c, de campion al unor cauze \u00een care nu crede (de coniven\u021b\u0103 cu autohtoni\u0219tii, na\u021bionali\u0219tii radicali, serviciile secrete). Keith Hitchins era un om liber \u0219i integru. Putea spune, parafraz\u00eend un vechi dicton:\u00a0<em>Amica Romaniae, sed magis<\/em>\u00a0<em>amica veritas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ceea ce m\u0103 readuce la titlul acestui modest omagiu postum. Inspirat de un model polonez care ne-a impresionat pe am\u00eendoi (<em>Amicus Poloniae<\/em>), vechiul meu prieten Virgil Mihaiu, pe atunci director fondator al Institutului Cultural Rom\u00e2n de la Lisabona, a ini\u021biat \u00een 2009 titlul onorific de\u00a0<em>Amicus Romaniae<\/em>, decernat unor personalit\u0103\u021bi portugheze. Nu \u0219tiu ce s-a ales de aceast\u0103 frumoas\u0103 ini\u021biativ\u0103, care completeaz\u0103 la un nivel mai informal ordinele, decora\u021biile \u0219i titlurile acordate de Pre\u0219edinte, Academie, Patriarhie etc. Keith Hitchins a primit multe dintre acestea. Dar, pentru oameni excep\u021bionali \u0219i lumino\u0219i ca el, de o modestie ie\u0219it\u0103 din comun,\u00a0<em>Amicus Romaniae\u00a0<\/em>rezum\u0103 simbolic gratitudinea noastr\u0103.
